ALFAMICRO was founded in 1983, with the objective to do research, consultancy and engineering services to support advanced and integrated IT solutions for organizations, both public an private, namely supporting SMEs to achieve sustained global competitiveness. ALFAMICRO currently develops innovative solutions with the aim to address the technical and social challenges of the 21st Century, with emphasis on user-driven open innovation. The main lines of action are related to behaviour transformation, mobile and wireless technologies, RFID, sensor networks, Internet of Things, semantic modelling, energy efficiency, smart grids, smart cities, technology-enhanced learning, Living Labs, Web 2.0 tools and knowledge networks.
ALFAMICRO started its activity in Games development and selling in the early 80’s having created a large number of educational programmes for the SPECTRUM Platform. ALFAMICRO was the major Portuguese developer and also localized games for the Eastern European and South American Markets, having developed a market for a total of 5 Million Game units.
The company has been one of the foundational members of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL), geared to user-driven open innovation. Alfamicro is an active player in the Portuguese Living Lab Network as well as the Brazilian Living Lab Network. ALFAMICRO has co-chaired the Governance Group (LLPLG) of the ENoLL and has been recently elected for the presidency of the ENoLL Council. Currently, Alfamicro lead the energy thematic domain on energy and environment. ALFAMICRO has also played a crucial role in the creation of the European Games Network initiated in 2002. This initiative followed the active participation in the creation and development of a European Games Community promoted by Commission IST programme. ALFAMICRO has participated actively in the leading Games Developer community.
ALFAMICRO has developed a large number of integrated projects applied to SMEs in Portugal and elsewhere. The main sectors addressed are: automotive, food, furniture, plastics, energy, education, and plastics moulds. ALFAMICRO had and continues to have a central role in the creation and development of the Portuguese automotive Living Lab, an European success story which turnover went in about 10 years from 500 MEuro to approximately 6 BEuro (2008).
ALFAMICRO has developed the expertise in leading web technologies to integrate Web 2.0 solutions in existing SMEs business infrastructures, enabling them to increase their global market presence whilst accommodating mass customization. The community portals developed have enabled several organizations to achieve their strategic objectives and where applicable, increase their profitability.
ALFAMICRO has been and is involved in several EC Programmes e.g.: IST, ICT, TEN-TELECOM, ADAPT. The company is/has been a member of the following European Networks: ICIMS-NOE, IiM-B, IMS, MOTIVATION, EXPIDE, BRIDGES, TRANSACT and participates actively in other national and international institutions (e.g. IEEE, ACM, Siggraph, SMPTE, etc.).
ALFAMICRO has been involved in several EC Programmes e.g.: IST, ICT, TEN-TELECOM, ADAPT. IST participation is exemplified by: SMARTISAN, SCOOP, MOMENT, GEM Europe, Rural Wins, AFORO, PRIME, COMPANION, NEWTIME, TARGET, SAVE ENERGY, APOLLON, PreCO, FIREBALL, etc. The company is/has been a member of the following European Networks: ICIMS-NOE, IiM-B, IMS, MOTIVATION, EXPIDE, BRIDGES, TRANSACT and participates actively in other national and international institutions (e.g. IEEE, ACM, Siggraph, SMPTE, etc.).
